South African rapper 'Jub Jub' guilty of murder

South African rapper 'Jub Jub' guilty of murder

Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye (March 2010) Maarohanye is one of South Africa's best-known musicians
South African rapper Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye has been convicted of murder and attempted murder after driving into a group of schoolchildren in 2010.
Magistrate Brian Nemavhidi also convicted Maarohanye of racing on a public road and driving under the influence of drugs.
Maarohanye smashed his car into a group of pupils in Soweto in 2010, killing four of them and wounding two others.
Family members and schoolchildren cried as the judgement was handed down.
Maarohanye was one of South Africa's best-known musicians, but he fell from grace after the crash, the BBC's Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg says.

Maarohanye's co-accused, Themba Tshabalala, was also convicted of the charges.
They were allegedly drag-racing when their vehicles crashed into the children.
They had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Both had been out on bail since March 2010 - a decision which sparked protests among pupils who demanded their imprisonment.
Magistrate Nemavhidi revoked their bail and remanded them in custody until sentencing on 30 November.
The court room in Soweto, the main black township in Johannesburg, was packed and there were emotional scenes when the verdict was given.
One of the parents fainted and had to be carried out of the court room.
The court ruled that Maarohanye and Tshabalala were on cocaine and morphine when the accident happened.
The justice department welcomed the ruling, Sapa news agency reports.
"[The conviction] is clear confirmation of justice not only done but manifestly seen to be done," its spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga is quoted as saying.
"We commend the National Prosecuting Authority's aggressive stance of charging irresponsible drivers with murder instead of the usual culpable homicide, which usually attracts non-custodial sentences."

Niger/Delta Militants Group Threaten South Africa Investments

LAGOS — Nigeria's militant group MEND threatened on Saturday to attack South Africa's investments, including telecoms firm MTN, in the Niger Delta, because of the terror trial of its leader in Johannesburg.
"Our decision to attack South African investments in the Niger Delta is directly related to the conduct of President (Jacob) Zuma regarding the continued incarceration in South Africa of Henry Okah," the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said in an e-mail statement here.
Nigerian national Okah is facing trial in South Africa, where he has permanent residence, on charges that he orchestrated twin car bombings -- which killed 12 people in Abuja on October 1, 2010 -- from his home in Johannesburg. He has denied the charges.

"What is happening in South Africa is a travesty of justice which must be condemned by all," MEND said, adding that Pretoria was conniving with the Abuja authorities to detain Okah unjustly.
"The South African government is simply being used by the Nigerian government to hold Okah in prison for as long as it possibly can," it said.
MEND, which claimed Friday's attack on a facility operated by Agip, the Nigerian subsidiary of Italy's Eni, said mobile firm MTN would be targeted in its renewed attacks.
"MEND will commence with attacks on MTN South Africa infrastructure in the Niger Delta region," it said, but added that this will be done after pre-attack warnings.
"Concerning attacks on MTN related infrastructure, MEND will issue shortly a set of guidelines to MTN employees, customers and owners of properties accommodating MTN-related communication equipments," it said.
"These guidelines are intended to minimise civilian casualties and forestall the unnecessary destruction of privately-owned properties accommodating MTN equipments," it added.
For several years a MEND-led violent campaign against the oil industry in the southern delta region wreaked havoc with Nigeria's crude output.

S’Africa Bound Passengers Face Hell At Lagos Airport| Sun

As Nigeria/South African governments claim to have settled the deportation crisis arising from non possession of genuine vaccination cards, Johannesburg-bound passengers are yet to feel the impact of the truce.
Investigations by Daily Sun revealed that Nigerian passengers traveling to South Africa are now forced by the airlines to procure fresh vaccination cards from Port Health office at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, even when they tender vaccination cards and receipts from local government health departments, which is a proof that they have been inoculated.

When the reporter got to the MMIA, scores of passengers milled around the port health office to get vaccinated.
The ugly situation has forced desperate passengers to get double yellow fever vaccination, so as to board the airplane.
Aside forceful procurement of fresh vaccination cards, some of them miss their flights because the boarding gate would have closed by the time they are done with vaccination at the Port Health Office ... Trendinaija Source/Read More
